Similarities and Differences Between Metal Sealing Valve and Sanitary Ball Valve

The movement path of the metal sealing valve has the characteristics of both gate valve (multi-turn) and sanitary ball valve (90-degree turn), so its performance has the advantages of both gate valve and ball valve. The structures of the metal sealing valves and sanitary ball valves have similarities and differences, as is discussed below.

Similarities:

1. Both of the metal sealing valve and sanitary ball valve can achieve metal sealing and endure high temperature.

2. They share the same way of operation. They can be operated by hand wheel or bevel gear box.

3. They share the same way of valve stem action. Lift first to make the valve flap sealing surface move away from the valve seat sealing surface before the valve stem driving sphere to rotate 90 degrees, achieving the opening of the valve. Do it the other way around, and the valve is closed.

Differences:

1. The internal sphere structure of the metal sealing valve and the sanitary ball valve is different. The valve flap (sphere) of the metal sealing valve is a composite structure while the sphere of ball valve is an integral one.

2. The metal sealing valve has a two-way sealing, which is the same as the gate valve. There is no requirement for flow direction. The ball valve has a single-way sealing, and there’re requirements for flow direction.

3. The guide groove of the metal sealing valve is on the bracket, and the guide pin is on the valve stem. At each end of the guide pin is installed a roller. So the guide pin has rolling friction inside the guide groove, the friction is small. The guide groove of the ball valve is on the valve stem and the guide pin is mounted on the bracket. The friction between the two is sliding friction and the friction is large.

4. An upper sealing can be designed for the metal sealing valve, enabling adding or replacing stuffing when the valve is under pressure. The ball valve is not appropriate to be designed to have an upper sealing.

5. One can purge the cavity of the metal sealing valve when it is closed. The same thing can’t be done to the ball valve.
